KICK MALARIA OUT (KMO) 2009

Kick Malaria Out (KMO) 2009 Campaign

Why KMO?

KMO's intervention is as a result of a noticeable flaw in Malaria Control, Elimination and Eradication strategies around the world. Almost all Malaria Control efforts lack citizen centered approach and by this we mean - they do not engage the vulnerable into the core ''eradication'' or ''control'' efforts and this is where KMO comes in to fill that gap.

KMO's approach is to use graphical illustrations to educate the citizens about Mosquitoes, Malaria and how they can avoid the parasite and eventually avoid the disease.

Avoiding the parasite is ''NOT'' about covering themselves with nets! It is about educating the at-risk Malaria victim about the breeding fields within his/her households and communities and how he/she can avoid creating such breeding fields and also eliminate existing breeding fields.  Available information from many parts of Africa indicates that, for lack of education in communities most people do not even know how to use the nets when it is distributed to them and thereby uses it for different things including  fishing, clothes, rags etc. It is no surprise therefore that, in spite of the massive net distribution (Ghana for example), the country still records high Malaria deaths.

KMO is limiting itself to West Africa for financial reasons but hopefully as the message of KMO goes further, other organizations in mosquito endemic countries will sign on and tap into our expertise and organize same projects in their respective countries.

Why KMO is different

KMO's approach is different from all other existing interventions within Africa. We are using this campaign to appeal to donors to allocate some of their funds to educate the citizens even if they are distributing nets to them. Illiteracy is very high in our part of the world and the only way we can ''eradicate'' Malaria is if we are collectively serious about it. We should allocate resources to educate the citizens on whatever measures we put in place for their benefit and we should empower them to be responsible for the eradication within their communities.

It is an undeniable fact that if we continue to neglect the education aspect in the eradication of Malaria, all efforts are bound to fail as present signs point to that direction. KMO is here to open a new chapter in Malaria Eradication efforts.
